Personal Statement

My work is inspired by my own fear of losing my life, and of others. I desire understanding from this fear, the only way for me is through art. Repressed fear is the greatest enemy of all human interactions, I hope in expressing my own fear, I can help others do the same. To live life to the fullest, with the acknowledgment of their fear instead of repressing it.

Using inspirations from my daily life, I draw unconsciously onto paper. The lucky few selected ones will then be turned into prints. The translation from the raw unconscious drawings into a meticulously crafted print gives me time to ponder on why is that drawing interesting to me and the meaning of the image. The media act as collaborators, adding and subtracting elements from my artwork. I often work into the same image a few times through different printmaking techniques, until I am happy with the final product.

The source of inspiration for me are Ernest Becker’s book ‘The Denial of Death’, where he examines and explores why and how repressed fears are formed. Hans Holbein’s humorous prints on ‘The Dance of Death’ tackle both the serious problem of life and death, also a political propaganda that takes jabs at the corrupted Christianity at the time, it teaches me the importance of humor during dark times.

Through my practice, I aim to reinvent the relationship between us and fear. It is not a thing to be shunned or shut out but is an emotion that needs to be acknowledged and understood. I believe that fear is the root of all inequalities happening in the world, and I hope my artwork can influence people to change that one day.
